We went to watch as Kahn and Neek let go of their musical inhibitions last night for their first "Death Disko" event in the caves of Cosies!, Bristol.
When Kahn and Neek AKA Gorgon Sound AKA founders of Bandulu Records, made the decision to host an event at the tiny 100-person music venue, I worried that it it would be a sweaty, crowded roadblock - and it was - but only in a way that Bristol always knows how to enjoy. The dance floor was filled wall-to-wall with all the people and all the goodness of a legendary Bristol party from start to end. The crowd came through and so did the vibes.
It was a beautiful thing to watch a room full of expectant revellers waiting for a typical Kahn and Neek set full of hype-heavy, bass-heavy grime and dubplates but instead be gifted with with late 70’s and early 80’s post-punk rock from the likes of Joy Division and The Slits. The crowd looked as if they weren’t quite sure whether they should be enjoying it or not. But what began as an awkward shuffle, ended as a fully appreciative skank out. It seemed that as Kahn and Neek let go, they took everyone else with them.
“And when we did play grime, it wasn’t because that was expected of us it was just because they were tunes that we like”
The first half of the night almost resembled a social experiment, testing how people would react to the unexpected coming from two of their favourite artists. But everyone was there to see Kahn and Neek and after only 30 minutes it was clear they could impart whichever music they chose without fear of people leaving which, to some extent, gave them power to swerve their audience in any which way by the fact they had to listen to and absorb whatever Kahn and Neek played. As time went on, the old-school rock, pop and electronica, mainly coming from Khan, was increasingly well received as if it were what people had come for.
When it hit the early hours, the Bandulu founders took everyone through a selection of strictly vinyl Dub and Reggae which then descended into Grime and other more recognisable Khan and Neek sounds and, needless-to-say, the party was on point straight through 'til 4.
