DeCyphers are a Bristol based 5 piece Hip Hop band with a stylistically unique take on the genre, blending a heavy cocktail of original compositions with classic funk and jazz influenced breaks.
The inception of DeCyphers is accredited to three virtuoso jazz musicians whose shared love for Hip Hop fuelled them to start a monthly open mic night at ‘The Canteen’ on Stokes Croft, providing a platform for local lyricists to showcase their skill. Opening up the mic to a range of performers from MCs, singers and poets to beatboxers and fellow musicians has ensured that the display of talent is ever engaging, with a 'something for everyone' approach to what is often seen as an underground and segregated genre of music.
The use of veteran musicianship from the band members has distinctly set them aside from many other local hip hop open mic nights, serving as a catalyst for bringing like-minded local talents together and building various musical connections. Originally starting as an instrumental trio playing covers of classic hip hop beats, they have since adopted local MCs Goose and Social Conscience as front men for the band and have accumulated a high volume of original compositions.
DeCyphers continue to develop outside their monthly open mic night, decimating various hip hop venues in the South West and Wales area. Their debut festival season also saw them grace a plethora of stages across the country, establishing them as a much sought after live act. Although all of the members continue to work on various other musical projects, they consistently seek to evolve the bands live shows and ensure the open mic night events are ever absorbing. Recently celebrating its first birthday, their dynamic monthly residency at The Canteen continues to grow in popularity and is fast becoming a staple part of the Bristol music diet.
